Charlie Lee Sparks Debate Over Bitcoin Tweet




Charlie Lee has sparked enthusiastic debate in the community with a tweet that claimed that “some self-proclaimed Bitcoin Maximalists are actually Bitcoin Extremists.”

In a tweet that was sent out just recently, the founder of Litecoin argued that:

“Some self-proclaimed Bitcoin Maximalists are actually Bitcoin Extremists. They think all other coins are scams and will go to zero. Maximalists think Bitcoin is and will remain the dominant cryptocurrency but there is room for altcoins to exist and even do well.”

The statement of Lee incited a series of witty responses — some were recalcitrant while some were confirmatory — that included one from crypto personalityJameson Lopp, who said, “Bitcoin Supremacists, please. Extremists has a negative connotation,” adding “I identify as a Segregated Witness.”

Aware of Lee’s goading, Ragnar Lifthrasir, who is the founder of the International Blockchain Real Estate Association (IBREA), responded to Lee that he was on “the path to wrong-think,” and that using the jargon of extremism was little more than a smear of anyone whose “opinion differs from Charlie’s.”

Lee’s comments also triggered arguments over whether Bitcoin “maximalism,” is little more than a marketing phrase allegedly made by altcoin founders, as well as over Bitcoin’s prevailing brand dominance. Some commentators answered — without announcing any allegiances — that ultimately it will be the market and tangible use cases that will distinguish the successful projects in a sector of flourishing cryptocurrencies.
