The personal merchant account of Andrew Torba — the founder of the social media platform Gab — on Coinbase has been terminated, according to the official Gab.com Twitter account.
The blog Breaker reported on this matter, saying that the Coinbase business account of Torba was shut down last month.
It was speculated that a potential reason why it is difficult for Gab to acquire a payment processor is its standing for being the social network for those who are banned from mainstream platforms because of uttering what can be deemed as hate speech.
Last year, the New York Times cited Gab as a social network that was utilized by the shooter in Pittsburgh to issue a final message before he struck a synagogue. After the tragic incident, Torba declared that the Pittsburgh shooter was not representative of the user base of the social media site.
Gab labels itself on its site as a “social network that champions free speech, individual liberty and the free flow of information online. All are welcome.”
The Coinbase merchant account merchandise shop of the anonymous foreign publishing nonprofit WikiLeaks had also been shut down because of service violations.
